The Athletics are looking ahead—far ahead. Starting Friday, they’ll begin selling priority access for season tickets to their planned Las Vegas stadium, set to open in 2028.
That’s priority access, not actual tickets. And that’s for a stadium that hasn’t even broken ground yet.
The A’s hope to debut in their new $1.75 billion ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip, built on the site of the recently imploded Tropicana casino hotel. Construction is slated to begin in April, covering just nine of the 33 available acres. Meanwhile, the team will spend the next three seasons in West Sacramento, but in an unprecedented move for Major League Baseball, they refuse to adopt their temporary home city’s name. Instead, they’ll simply be “The Athletics,” using “ATH” as their boxscore abbreviation rather than “SAC.”
Why the omission? Maybe they’re hesitant to embrace another city they’ll soon leave behind. Maybe they don’t want to be associated with the minor leagues while sharing a stadium with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats. Or maybe they just don’t want to spend a dime rebranding before Vegas.
For those eager to claim a future seat in Sin City, joining the priority list will cost $19.01—a nod to the franchise’s 1901 founding in Philadelphia. Sign-ups open at 9 a.m. on March 7 at athletics.com/vegas.
Current A’s season ticketholders, Las Vegas Aviators ticketholders, and all Clark County, Nevada, residents will get priority access over other fans.
The A’s will play their first home game of the 2024 season on March 31 against the Chicago Cubs—just don’t expect to see “Sacramento” on the scoreboard.
