Las Vegas Sands (LVS), through its flagship Marina Bay Sands (MBS) resort, is investing in the future of Singapore’s workforce with a new education initiative.
This latest effort reflects LVS’s longstanding commitment to economic development in Singapore, where MBS is a major employer. The resort recently announced plans to expand its workforce by 2,000 positions, further reinforcing its role in shaping the country’s service industry.
Introducing the Sands Hospitality Scholarship (SHS)
The newly launched Sands Hospitality Scholarship (SHS) aims to nurture the next generation of professionals in Singapore’s fast-growing tourism and hospitality sector. Starting in 2025, over 100 second-year students will be eligible for the program, provided they pursue studies in relevant fields.
“In line with our growth plans, we’re always seeking top talent. This scholarship is designed to inspire more students to explore careers in this dynamic industry,” said MBS Chief Operating Officer Paul Town.
The scholarships will be available to students enrolled at select institutions, including:
- Nanyang Polytechnic
- Ngee Ann Polytechnic
- Republic Polytechnic
- Singapore Polytechnic
- Temasek Polytechnic
Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)
Each school will see around 19 eligible recipients, while SIT will support roughly 14 students. The funds can be used to cover tuition, learning materials, and other academic-related expenses. Beyond financial aid, scholarship recipients will also gain access to internships and potential full-time roles at MBS, particularly in areas like food and beverage and event management—sectors known for strong career growth in the hospitality industry.
Tourism Growth Fuels Talent Demand
The scholarship program comes at a time when Singapore’s tourism sector is expanding. According to Mordor Intelligence, inbound travel rose from 9.6 million in 2009 to 19.1 million in 2019, with the industry expected to maintain a compound annual growth rate above 6.9% in the coming years. This growth has created a rising demand for skilled hospitality professionals.
Continuing a Legacy of Educational Support
The SHS builds on an existing partnership between MBS and SIT. Since 2018, the resort has contributed over $286,000 in scholarships to 80 SIT students pursuing hospitality-related degrees.
The scholarship also aligns with MBS’s ongoing redevelopment efforts. The resort is currently undergoing a $4.3 billion expansion to enhance its facilities and maintain its competitive edge in Singapore’s two-casino landscape. Although construction delays—partly due to the pandemic—have pushed back the timeline, the upgrades are expected to generate new job opportunities, potentially benefiting future scholarship recipients.
With this $1 million investment, LVS is reinforcing its commitment to Singapore’s growth by empowering its youth and ensuring the hospitality industry continues to thrive.
