Andrew Yang Urges Stricter Rules on Harmful Sports Betting

Andrew Yang

Andrew Yang, former Democratic presidential candidate and New York City mayoral hopeful, is raising concerns about the impact of sports betting on American men, advocating for tighter state regulations to curb its harmful effects.

In a Newsweek op-ed, Yang shared his personal experience as a bettor, revealing he was lured into wagering by a $250 promotion from an unnamed sportsbook. While admitting to enjoying betting, he regrets his involvement, emphasizing how sports betting exploits emotions often more prevalent in men.

“Online sports betting is a perfect storm for men. It taps into our love for sports, money, speed, risk, and the illusion of insider knowledge. It feels social and even productive, like you’re earning money by watching games,” Yang wrote.

Men at Greater Risk of Problem Gambling

Research supports Yang’s claims, showing that men remain more susceptible to addiction than women, including gambling, alcohol, and drug dependencies.

Financial Strain and Domestic Violence Concerns

Yang highlighted the financial dangers of sports betting, pointing to studies showing that for every $1 wagered, $2 is lost in potential investments. Research from Brigham Young University, Northwestern, and the University of Kansas confirms this pattern.

He also warned of rising personal bankruptcies, especially in low-income households where men are frequent bettors. Studies from UCLA and USC have linked the surge in sports betting to declining credit scores and increased bankruptcies.

Additionally, Yang noted the emotional toll of losing bets, citing research that links legalized sports betting to a 9% rise in domestic violence.

Urging Caution in Expanding Sports Betting

Currently, 39 states and Washington, DC allow some form of sports betting. Yang urged states like Alabama, California, and Texas to resist legalization despite pressure from gaming lobbyists.

“Online sports betting acts like a tax on vulnerable, low-income men. It exacerbates financial and emotional stress. Policymakers should resist these harmful influences,” Yang concluded.
