Conor McGregor’s legal troubles are now affecting his business relationships. Following a jury verdict in an Irish civil court that found McGregor liable for sexually assaulting a woman in December 2018, two major companies have severed ties with the UFC star.
Proximo Spirits, the owner of Proper No. 12 Irish whiskey, and IO Interactive, a video game developer, both announced they are ending their partnerships with McGregor.
McGregor Responds: “I Know I Made Mistakes”
The jury awarded the victim €248,000 (approximately $258,000 USD). While McGregor maintains that the encounter was consensual, the woman testified that he “brutally raped and battered” her in a Dublin hotel room after a night out.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), McGregor, 36, acknowledged his regrets but insisted on his innocence:
“People want to hear from me, but I needed time. I know I made mistakes. Six years ago, I should have never responded to her outreaches. I should have shut the party down. I should never have stepped out on the woman I love the most in the world.
As much as I regret it, everything that happened that night was consensual, and all the witnesses present swore to that under oath. I have instructed my legal team to appeal the decision.
I can’t go back, but I will move forward. I am beyond grateful to my family, friends, and supporters all over the world who have stayed by my side. That’s it. No more. Getting back to the gym – the fight game awaits!”
Fallout from the Verdict
Proximo Spirits also announced that McGregor’s name and image would no longer be used to promote Proper No. 12. Although the company acquired the brand in a $600 million deal in 2021, McGregor had continued to promote it on social media.
McGregor’s Fighting Future
McGregor last competed in July 2021, suffering a leg break in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier. He was scheduled to return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June but withdrew due to a toe injury. The Irishman has lost three of his last four UFC bouts.
As McGregor looks to appeal the court ruling, his future in both business and fighting remains uncertain.
