Ex-Casino Chief Sibella Receives Money-Laundering Sentence

Sibella

Former president of prominent Las Vegas casinos, Scott Sibella, has been sentenced for money-laundering violations. In a federal court session held in downtown LA, US District Judge Dolly M. Gee delivered a sentence of one year’s probation and a $9,500 fine, alongside a $100 special assessment. This lenient sentence comes after Sibella’s admission of guilt in January for breaching the federal Bank Secrecy Act during his tenure at the MGM Grand Las Vegas.

The violations, spanning from August 2017 to February 2019, involved Sibella’s failure to report suspicious transactions, primarily large bets placed by Wayne Nix, a former minor-league baseball player known to operate an illicit sports-betting enterprise.

Sibella, who later served as president of Resorts World until his termination in 2023, confessed to federal investigators in 2022 about his awareness of Nix’s questionable financial activities.

Facing the prospect of up to five years in prison and a hefty fine, Sibella’s legal team advocated for probation, presenting letters of support from various figures, including Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill. The Probation Office recommended leniency, considering Sibella’s age and his acceptance of responsibility.

In the wake of Sibella’s admission, both the MGM Grand and Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas agreed to a $7.45 million settlement with the US Justice Department, coupled with enhanced compliance measures.

Meanwhile, Nevada regulators are contemplating punitive measures, including potential revocation or suspension of Sibella’s gambling license and fines of up to $750,000. The state Gaming Control Board has filed a complaint against him, which awaits deliberation by the Nevada Gaming Commission.

Before his tenure at the MGM Grand, Sibella held executive roles at other renowned Las Vegas establishments, including The Mirage and Treasure Island.

Sibella’s legal representation comprises Jeffrey Rutherford of Los Angeles and John Spilotro of Las Vegas, the latter being notable for his familial connection to mafia history in the city.
