The Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner, Louisiana, is transitioning from its long-time riverboat venue to a new land-based facility just inland from Lake Pontchartrain.
Boyd Gaming, which has operated the riverboat casino since its inception in 1994, will close the riverboat at 11:59 p.m. CDT on Saturday, June 1. The new land-based Treasure Chest Casino will open at 8 a.m. on Thursday, June 8. This new venue is situated at the end of Williams Blvd., about 1,000 feet from the current dock.
The upcoming land-based casino will offer 47,000 square feet of gaming space, nearly double the 24,000 square feet available on the boat. It will feature over 900 slot machines, two dozen live dealer table games, and a FanDuel Sportsbook set to open next month.
In addition to the expanded gaming options, the new facility aims to resemble a Las Vegas resort, with several dining options including a sports bar and grill and a fine dining steakhouse. The venue will also offer 10,000 square feet of customizable space for meetings and events.
The Treasure Chest will be the fourth land-based casino in Louisiana, following an amendment to the state’s gaming regulations in 2018. This amendment permits licensed riverboats to develop land-based casinos within 1,200 feet of their original locations. The change was prompted by hurricane damage to several riverboat casinos. Other land-based casinos in the state include Harrah’s New Orleans, Horseshoe Lake Charles, and The Queen Baton Rouge, with another in development in Bossier City.
While Harrah’s New Orleans caters primarily to tourists, the Treasure Chest focuses on local patrons. Boyd Gaming’s decision to invest in this project came after St. Tammany Parish voters rejected a 2021 proposal for a casino in Slidell. The Treasure Chest has struggled to regain its pre-pandemic visitor numbers, with 2019 gaming revenue at $108.3 million and 969,744 admissions, compared to just 556,824 entries in 2023, a nearly 43% decline in guests.
